iOS 6.1.2 Released; Fixes Battery Problem

Hello everyone! I’m writing this via my iPhone, so it will be brief. My iPad is stuck in Recovery Mode. If you know what that is, I’m sorry. If you don’t, you don’t want to.

Apple released iOS 6.1.2 today. This update is supposed to fix a bug in the calendar that was causing increased network activity and draining battery life, if I’m understanding it all correctly.

I wish I could tell you how long it took me to update, but alas, I can’t do it yet. If you have any problems downloading this update or after the update is installed, give me a shout and I’ll see what I can find out. Or, I’ll just commiserate.

I’m tired of pecking at this keyboard and also must attend to my ailing iPad. I’ll hopefully see all of you with a review in the morning or at least sometime tomorrow.

That’s it for me today. Until later, …

UPDATE: I’m just starting a full restore on my iPad (a 12-15 hour process for me) after fighting to get it started for several hours now since trying to update to 6.1.2.

I was told by my very sweet and super competent Apple senior advisor Kylie that this could be because something may have interrupted, however briefly, my attempt at a wireless update as opposed to doing the update through iTunes. A router dropping wifi for a moment or something similar may have stopped the update mid download causing the iPad to enter Recovery Mode.

The rest is a tale for another day.

If anyone else had problems updating to 6.1.2 wirelessly, leave me a note below please.

  1. I upgraded to the most current ios 6.1.2 I decided to restore my iphone 4 as I was planning on selling it as I am switching to the Galaxy 3s. Iphone is now stuck like cement in recovery mode. I have had various error messages most current is ‘error 3194′. Nearest Apple Store is 65 miles away. What a lovely Sunday I will have!

  2. This happened to my iPhone4 too. Stuck in recovery mode. Apparently no way to get out of it without losing data. What is the purpose of the active wifi connection during an OTA upgrade? It should be there only during download, and once the software was downloaded to the phone, and verified, the upgrade should be purely offline. This is really pathetic.

    • I agree completely Lars. It is pathetic and very frustrating! I hope your recovery went okay. As long as you were backed up recently to iCloud, your data should’ve been okay.

  3. I am going through the exact same thing as I type this, GRRR! My Iphone 4S went into restore mode immediately and I didn’t do anything wrong. I have had nothing but problems with my SECOND Iphone, first one brand new $700 phone which I began to have problems with about 4 months out of the box, but dealt with it and procrastinated till bout a week after my 1 year warranty was up :( They sent me a refurbished (someone elses problem) and within 2 weeks I began to have problems, thus the reason I decided to do this update, I thought it may help fix some of the problems. Now I have no phone and am having major problems getting it to restore. Getting all sorts of error messages! It may be working now-with a 25 hr load time??? IF it works I will loose a lot of data. My phone had a short little message, and nothing at all about what this would cause, if so, I would never have elected to do this! I have always updated and never had a problem. Apple really needs to make it clear that this can and/or will happen. I have talked to many people that this has happened to. Apparently the Ipads warn of this possibility? I don’t know as I do not own one, but it sure did a number on my second phone! Not so sure my 3rd will be another Iphone :( Hope your restore problems are all worked out by now-Not so sure mine will work?? Regards :)

    • It sounds like you’ve been through the wringer Laura! I hope things turn around for you with your iPhone. I really do! I know how frustrating these issues can be and understand how crazy it can make you feel. Let me know how things turn out!

  4. That happened to me with my last update on my iPad, and it was exactly what the Apple guy said. My internet went out… just for a moment … and I was toast. Full restore needed. Awful. I’m thinking of you and wishing you luck as you slog through the restore. Yuch.

    • Thanks Kathy! I remember you saying that now. It really is awful. I’m just glad I had a fairly recent iCloud backup to restore from or it would have been worse. As it is, I’m just trying to replace what was lost and rest. An exhausting process! I’ll see you all with a review tomorrow.

  5. Updated both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 at the same time thru WiFi. Both on AC power. IPad is fine after update but the iPhone went into recovery mode. 2nd time it happened to my iPhone so I know how it feels to wait for hours to restore. Damn.

    • I’m really sorry to hear about that Ed. Two times is just horrible for it to happen. You’d think there’d be some way for them to be able to get the device to just turn off, go back to where it was, or something I can’t think of because I don’t have the technical skills. Restoring is always awful. Restoring when you hadn’t planned on it, hadn’t backed up, or have over 60GB of things to restore is just a ridiculous mess. I hope your restore went okay at least.
